Pleasanton – MARK PITTA at Tommy T’s Comedy Club July 2th – July 6th

MARK PITTA
http://www.markpitta.net

Mark PIttaMark Pitta began his stand-up comedy career on a bet. It was at a comedy club called The Punchline in San Francisco and his college buddies thought the class clown didn’t have the guts to go up on “open mike” night that Sunday. This was 1981. Mark took the dare and hasn’t left the stage since.

After honing his skills the next three years at clubs like the Holy City Zoo, The Other Cafe, and The Punchline- Mark left the Bay Area for Los Angeles and his dream of appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. On August 21 1990, he walked through those famous curtains as Johnny announced his name.

“It was surreal,” says Mark. “I really didn’t know I was on until I watched the show later that night on my own TV.”

When Johnny Carson left The Tonight Show, Mark didn’t. He added five more appearances with Jay Leno.

Mark’s other credits include Comedy Central’s The A List; Premium Blend Make Me Laugh and Dr. Katz.

Mark also hosted Fox Television’s Totally Hidden Video for 2 seasons plus NBC’s Friday Night Videos. Mark also landed acting roles on 3rd Rock From The Sun and Mad About You, the same year he wrote and starred in a pilot for NBC.

Mark has toured with Howie Mandel, Celine Dion, Vannessa Williams, and Paul Anka.

July 4, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Theater with a LIVE Simulcast at the California Veterans Home Grounds, FREE

Festival del Sole, Napa Valley’s premier international music festival, is proud to present a free Independence Day Concert. Presented in gratitude to the Napa Valley community, the Independence Day Concert features the Napa Valley Symphony in an all-American program that includes the world premiere of composer Nolan Gasser’s American Festivals, written on a text by poet Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and narrated by Emmy-award winning actor Craig T. Nelson; Dudley Buck’s The Festival Overture on the American National Air; and Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, featuring piano prodigy Conrad Tao. The evening concludes with a spectacular fireworks display.

One of the Festival highlights is the highly-anticipated world premiere of American Festivals, a symphonic oratorio by composer Nolan Gasser, on a text by poet and renowned golf course designer Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

American Festivals is narrated by Emmy-award winning actor Craig T. Nelson (“Coach, The District, The Incredibles, and Born On The 4th of July”), and features internationally-celebrated mezzo-soprano Jill Grove, and baritone Eric Owens, widely acclaimed for his commanding stage presence and inventive artistry, and the Napa Valley Symphony and Chorus. American Festivals is comprised of four movements and uses four major American holidays as reference points: Fourth of July, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. This work will be performed in its entirety for the first time at this concert.

Michelle Knox & Eunkang Koh 2-artist show of new works in metal and glass by Michelle Knox and gouache and ink by Eunkang Koh opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday July 10 from 6pm to 9pm.  Both Koh and Knox approach the landscape of our reality (or unreality) from a tranquil center.  Each artist has shown their work extensively, but this show marks the debut of Knox and Koh at Varnish Fine Art.

Eunkang Koh constructs worlds in gouache and ink on paper where creatures of an animal/human hybrid nature act, exist, and adapt within highly stylized, monumental environments.  Koh’s penchant for fantasy and storytelling was instilled in her by close relatives at an early age in Seoul Korea.  Following travels to New York and Europe, Koh entered graduate studies in the US where she feels her true life as an artist began.  Her personal philosophy is heavily influenced by early exposure to Korean myths and the tenets of Buddhism where the physical world in which we live is nothing more than a perceived illusion.  “My characters contain ironic gestures that simultaneously evoke humor and the grotesque,” says Koh.  “My work illustrates how I see humans and human society.  It is a visualization of my own perception of society using satirical and

metaphorical representations of creatures.”   As Koh’s work progresses the

illusionary landscapes of her creation become equal players in the narrative.

San Francisco Bay Area artist Michelle Knox incorporates glass and metal in each work to create sculpture that emphasizes grace and subtlety of form.  “My work and my working process attempts to find tranquility.  To reconnect myself with myself and to others,” says Knox.

DESCRIPTION:

“The Best I’ve Ever Had”, a lavish, luxurious and sensorial exhibition of paintings by Alexandra Chowaniec and Kristen van Diggelen incites desire, memory and the experience of materiality. Sharing deeply held beliefs in rigorous mastery, Alexandra and Kristen engage the languages and histories of representational painting as contemporary female painters. Chowaniec investigates desire through the concept of the gaze, expressing the act of looking as separate from what is seen. Explorations of the potential of display within specific socio-cultural conditions by van Diggelen evoke psychological narratives. Their elucidation of fetish objects, both quotidian and sacred, fluctuates between internal and external visual landscapes.
