DESCRIPTION:

The Seventh Annual Spring Art Auction presented by Visual Aid and Academy of Friends will feature over $100,000 worth of contemporary art and unique luxury items. Following a fabulous reception and preview, items will be auctioned in a lively exchange led by celebrity auctioneer, Stephen Tourell of Toomey-Tourell Fine Art who is a member of Visual Aid’s Board of Directors.

 

Proceeds from the evening will support Visual Aid’s renowned programs for artists with life-threatening illnesses and 15 HIV/AIDS service organizations designated by Academy of Friends.

 

Come early to mingle and party while previewing fabulous items and planning your auction strategy. Savor Barefoot Cellars champagne cocktails, wine and hors d’oeuvres before giving way to the main event–a live auction at 7pm.

DESCRIPTION:

TOPAZ and the SUKAY Ensemble will perform “Sounds of South America II,” a benefit concert where net proceeds will benefit the victims of the recent Peruvian earthquake.

 

Mimi Dye, violist and Artistic Director of TOPAZ, along with Eddie Navia and the SUKAY Ensemble will present festive Andean music from Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The performance will feature pan flutes, Peruvian guitars, percussion, vocals and dancers, including talented, young performers from Castilleja School in Palo Alto.

 

About the Artists

Mimi Dye, violist, composer and Artistic Director of TOPAZ, is well known to Bay Area audiences as a soloist, chamber musician, and jazz performer.

Ms. Dye was a student of Itzhak Perlman.  Ms. Dye has appeared as soloist with the Carmel Bach Festival, San Francisco Chamber Players, New York String Ensemble, Nova Vista Symphony, Palo Alto Philharmonic and the Baroque Chamber Players and is an artist-in-residence at the Yachats Festival in Yachats, Oregon.  Ms. Dye has performed with jazz performers including Eddie Gale, Wayne Wallace, Terry Disley and Peter Barshay.  Her numerous orchestral credits include playing in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, touring with Barbra Streisand and recording movie scores in Los Angeles.  Her compositions include an album of solo viola works, two chamber jazz suites, and a new jazz CD, “River in the Sun.”  Ms. Dye has also composed two other CDs.

 

Eddy Navia, born in Bolivia, is one of the greatest exponents and master virtuosos of the Charango, a traditional Bolivian stringed instrument. He became artistic director of Pachamama and Sukay in 1989, and writes most of their new material. Navia was a founding member of the legendary Bolivian group Savia Andina, with whom he has 35 recordings. Savia Andina was a major force in bringing Andean music into mainstream South American culture and toured throughout the world, even hitting the Top 40 charts.

Eddy Navia has 8 other solo recordings.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Frank Ferrante was raised in Sierra Madre, California by the offspring of Italian immigrants Dominic and Theresa (Torres) Ferrante. His father was a stockbroker; his mother a housewife and preschool teacher. He attended Catholic schools including Christian Brothers run La Salle High School in Pasadena where he first performed comedy.

Career

Discovered in 1985 by Groucho’s son playwright Arthur Marx when Ferrante was attending the University of Southern California Division of Drama, Ferrante went on to portray Groucho from age 15 to 85 in the New York, London and PBS television versions of Arthur’s play. Ferrante was 23 years old when Groucho: A Life in Revue opened off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 1986.

Ferrante played the Groucho inspired roles off-Broadway in The Cocoanuts in 1996 and regional productions of Animal Crackers at Goodspeed Opera House, The Huntington Theatre, Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, Paper Mill Playhouse and Arena Stage.

Ferrante acts and directs throughout the regions most notably at Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre where he directed and developed the premiere of the Pulitzer Prize finalist Old Wicked Songs. There Ferrante starred as playwright/director George S. Kaufman in the one-man play written by Frank entitled By George.

Since 2001, Ferrante performs his improvisationally based comedy in the European style cirque show Teatro ZinZanni playing an outrageous Latin lover named Caesar. In Zinzanni, Ferrante played opposite legendary cabaret star Liliane Montevecchi, Joan Baez, Sally Kellerman and The MotelsMartha Davis. In 2004, he became a question on the television program Jeopardy.
